Ruiz, 41, has been appointed as the successor to Fernando Batista, who was sacked in September after a six-month tenure. The former FC Twente player has been interim coach during the previous international period, leading Costa Rica to Nations League wins against Nicaragua (3-0) and Haiti (2-0).

Ruiz has a successful background in football, having won the league title with FC Twente in 2010. He has also played for PSV and LD Alajuelense, where he worked as an assistant coach and youth trainer.

Costa Rica missed out on the 2026 World Cup, but the team will face Ecuador and Argentina in friendly matches in November. Ruiz will be in charge of the team for these matches, marking the start of his tenure as the new coach of Costa Rica.
