Republic of Ireland players skipped the usual pre-match formalities and did not shake hands with their Israeli opponents. The squad also wore black armbands in remembrance of all lives lost in the Gaza conflict.
The decision followed a lengthy meeting at the team hotel in Debrecen, where the players voted to fulfil the fixture. The matches between the countries had faced calls for Ireland to withdraw because of the war.
Head coach Heimir Hallgrímsson said afterwards that the players' actions had raised awareness worldwide. Goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu missed this match but was expected to return for the game against Austria. Ireland won the match in Hungary 3-0.
