Rein de Vries missed two SC Cambuur matches in 1988. He worked at the Leeuwarden airbase administration and attended a training exercise in Goose Bay, Canada. He thought it would be fun to join in, but he missed the Cambuur matches. "I saw on the schedule that Cambuur had to play away twice, so I went," he explained. "But somehow the programme was completely rearranged and Cambuur suddenly played at home twice, against DS and against FC Eindhoven."
De Vries was always there, except when he was ill. "I've been ill, of course, but it always got better by the weekend," he said. His wife nodded in agreement: "Rein's father had bronchitis and often felt unwell. But when the weekend arrived, he'd shout through the house, 'I feel much better, I'm sure!' And then he'd be back in the stadium on Sundays."
