VoetbalPrimeur reports that both De Boer and Van der Zee have expressed significant concerns about Leonardo's abilities at Ajax. The Brazilian was signed for nearly 20 million euros, making him the most expensive transfer in the Eredivisie last summer, but he has yet to meet expectations. Van der Zee, who previously scouted Leonardo at Santos in Brazil, is not surprised by his performance. "He has only average speed, is a 16-meter penalty specialist with little length and physical strength, and is weak in his footballing abilities," Van der Zee told the NOS.
Van der Zee also stated that he was not positive about Leonardo's abilities and believes that there are better options available in Brazil and Colombia for the same price. De Boer shares Van der Zee's doubts, saying that he does not see Leonardo as a top striker and that he is not convinced that he can keep up with the game. However, De Boer does praise Leonardo's goal-scoring ability and suggests that he may need more time to prove himself.
Leonardo has played 11 official matches for Ajax, scoring two goals, but has mostly come off the bench and played only 357 minutes.
